Definition:

Collage is a technique of art production, primarily used in the visual arts, where the artwork is made from an assemblage of different forms, thus creating a new whole. Collage is an umbrella term and includes painting, wood, photomontage and decoupage.

​The album cover of Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. The cover is an elaborate collage by the artist, Peter Blake. The collage depicts the four Beatles in colorful military style uniforms surrounded by the images of 58 iconic people such as Bob Dylan, Karl Marx, Marlene Dietrich and Oscar Wilde. In the foreground the name of the album is printed on a drum and a flowerbed features the name of the band in bright red flowers.

STEP 1: Guidance

The description for a collage needs to reference the following aspects of the artwork:

  • Artist.

  • Name of image.

  • Artistic style.

  • Materials.

  • Texture.

  • Color.

  • Description of the various forms of images used to create the collage.

 

Depending on the circumstances of the description requirements, an artwork may need a Spatial Description. A Spatial Description uses a quadrant system to divide the image into four sections and convey the positioning of the elements to facilitate spatial awareness for the user.
